Note to self... do not run while sick.

Did I mention I'm ill? I have the cold from hell, and last night it began to hurt my lungs to breathe, and even more so when I cough. I was feeling horrible all day at work, but I'm stubborn and like to pretend like I am fine.

My day started like this:

It continued like this:

Which led to this:

With a final dose of this:

It took me WAY too long to run that 13.1 miles today--like I was seriously sucking it up, but I was pushing myself as hard as I could. I just couldn't breathe! Shortly upon my arrival home, my sister made me go to urgent care where lovely things happened like an x-ray of my chest to see if I have pneumonia.

Plus note: I do not have pneumonia. Sad note: I have a bad viral infection, and the doctor was very mad at me for having run a half marathon that morning. What can I say, I am hardcore. Either that, or foolish.

Now I have inhalers that I am supposed to use every few hours, and I had to do weird breathing treatments. Also, I still feel like crap.

Also, I am not allowed to run or do any aerobic activity for at least a week, per my doctor. She's very strict, and finds me very ridiculous.

At least I finished, right?

Hot Mess

I am falling apart at the seams. Seriously, I feel like my life is out of balance or something... and as a result, my lungs and respiratory system are rebelling.

I have the cold from hell. I feel like crap. I sound like an old man. One of my clients began his appointment today by saying, "Are you okay? You look terrible!"

Did I mention I'm running a half marathon tomorrow? The beer run has been established as a no-go, as we didn't want to pay the entry fee... Did I even mention the beer run to the blog world? I was going to run 13.1 miles, drive home, and run 3more miles in this really cool "Beer Run" where they give you a beer at each milepost. However, now I'm only supposed to run 13.1 miles, and I can't even breath while I'm sitting. Oh, the drama that is my life.

I will write again soon, assuming I do not die.

Here are my goals for July, a little in advance:

1. Stop drinking so much! Alcohol is bad. Just because it is summer, it does not mean I need to drink beer more often. Even though beer is so delicious...

2. Must. make. pants. fit.

3. Drink more water. Take vitamins regularly, not just when I see them sitting on the kitchen shelf and go, "Oh yeah, I have vitamins." Establish proper immune system so that working with the general public does not give me the plague every few days.

4. Be nicer to the boyfriend. I feel like I pick on him a lot. Also, be nicer to Shawna, even though she is gross and wipes her dirty socks on my face when I least expect it.

5. Train for Hood to Coast, and get all hardcore and such, so that I feel less like I'm falling apart at the seams and more like I can kick someone in the face and injure them severely because I have powerful leg muscles.

You're welcome.

So, there's this thing...

I'm supposed to be running a half marathon in three days. However, I cannot currently breathe. It seems that weeks of being surrounded by sick people (Shawna, our neighbor, my client's, Jason's daughter...) has left me with a case of the plague.

Hand sanitizer is my friend. I have learned my lesson. Can I have my health back, please?

This could be interesting...

June 26!

I just registered for a half marathon.

Why do I do these things?

I still have the plague, so I sound like a boy in puberty today.

Happy run-iversary to me!

I spent the night before my half marathon with my drunken friends... I was drinking water and was so hydrated by the end! The night before we went to a gay male strip club and Shawna paid a stripper to kiss my cheek--yeah, he pulled my hair, licked my neck, and moaned in my ear. It's the most action I've gotten in awhile. I probably got herpes.

So the morning of my race my hungover friends decided to just meet up with me later, thus leaving me to find my way to the race on my own. I got lost. Very lost. I almost cried a little cause I hate being lost so much. This was the same race I ran last year, for my very first 5k, so I should have been able to find it (I had directions) but I am awesome and it took me awhile. Basically I got there with enough time to pin on my race number and hit the end of the starting line to get my little self running.

I remember thinking at the 3 mile mark how weird it was that only a year ago I ran that distance and thought it was super hard and I would die. There's something to be said for that. There was a very sweaty man in front of me, and he and I kept passing each other. He seemed very competitive, which made me want to beat him. I did until the very end, when he blew by me and killed my hopes and dreams a tiny bit.

The race went along the water for awhile, and through downtown Portland, and was super pretty until around mile 6 or 7 when we came upon a little industrial area or something... it was the most boring few miles ever. We ran down a road, turned around, and ran back up it through the boring industrial area with the sun beating down on us. LAME. And very discouraging. But I decided that the faster I ran, the faster I would be finished.

The funniest part of the race came at mile 11. There I was, running along with sweat pouring off of me, wondering why my ipod was acting up (I think my sweat fried it, which is why it says I only ran 12.9 miles or whatever), and I thought to myself, "All I want in the world is a chocolate milkshake."

I couldn't get the chocolate milkshake out of my brain. Which is why when I finished, I said to everyone, "Let's go get milkshakes!" Shortly afterward I found myself eating a burger and shake for breakfast at 9 a.m. I'm so cool.

All in all, it was a super experience. The course sucked a tiny bit, but I'm really proud of myself for finishing and for coming so far in a year. Now I just have the Portland marathon next October... Every time I think about how hard it is to run 13.1 miles I wonder how the heck I'm going to run 26.2 miles! One way to find out, I guess.

Details to follow...

2:22:02 later, I finished my second half marathon! That gives me a 10:50/mile pace, which I was pretty proud of. That's 10 or so minutes faster than my last half marathon, which makes me feel like I accomplished something. Here are some photos to tide you over until I have time to actually detail the awesomeness that was my run-iversary:

Around mile 11 I decided that all I wanted in the world was a chocolate milkshake. It was post-race that I discovered that Burgerville serves burgers and shakes at 9 a.m. Best discovery ever! Also, the finish clock wasn't my real time cause it took me 4 minutes to get across the mat (it was a crowded event).

More amusing tales of running and junk food eating at a later date.

Oh, bother.

I decided to run my half marathon for my run-iversary on Sunday. Then yesterday I went for a run with my new running buddy (I love having someone to run with!) and found myself doubled over in pain with stomach cramps on the trail.

This has not left me feeling very confident. I'm really worried about finishing on Sunday--particularly cause I feel like I trained more and was in better shape for the last one.

Oh well, I guess there's only one way to find out of if this will end badly...

Bittersweet beginnings...

Remember that job I interviewed for yesterday? Totally got it! I start Monday morning at 8 a.m.

On one hand, I'm super excited cause I'll be moving back to Central Oregon... and I'll be in the same town as Shawna! WOO! I love Central Oregon, and this is a new career for me so who knows what it might lead to. Also, it's a position that utilizes the fact that I am bilingual and I've always wanted to put my Spanish skills to good use.

On the other hand, I'm sad. I just let myself get happy about living closer to friends I've been away from for too long, and now I'm leaving them again. It's making my heart break a tiny bit to think about that. Also, I've worked for over five years to progress in the same career and now I'm switching and I feel like I'm giving up and losing all that I've worked for.

Also, I think I have to skip my half marathon. Sad story. Things happen, I suppose. I'm totally going to run 13.1 miles that day on my own, because that's enough for me.

So yeah... we'll see where this leads!

I know the truth.

I went for a long run this morning while in Boise to visit friends... they have this really cool path by the river that has mile markers and such, and I love it so.

Three miles into my run my ipod/Nike+ froze beyond repair and I couldn't get it to do anything. I considered turning around, and actually did at one point, but luckily I turned back around cause I knew I'd just be mad at myself if I didn't do the 11 miles I was planning. The thought of running 8 more miles without music or a running buddy was not pleasant, but I actually ended up enjoying myself cause there were so many people on the path and all kinds of nature to listen to.

So yeah... Mini Leslie would have been up to 80 miles with that 11 mile run today, and Lance Armstrong totally would have talked to me at the end, but instead it says I only ran 3 miles. Lies, Nike+, all lies...

Luckily my friend's boyfriend is a technological wizard and totally fixed it for me. Apparently all you have to do when it freezes is hold down two certain buttons to reset it. This is why people read manuals, I'm guessing. Oh well--at least I know I ran 11 miles today! Thank you, mile markers on the Boise Greenbelt...

Happy St. Patty's Day!

I attended a green-themed birthday party for my heterosexual life partner's 25th birthday this past weekend. It was a super awesome time, and we were looking pretty damn good. We started out our evening like this:

And several green jell-o shots later we ended our evening like this:

Hahaha. Oh, memories. She was feeding me cake directly off the cake platter. My shirt said, "I'm not short, I'm leprechaun sized" which basically made it my favorite thing ever. Also, it was sparkly! Everything is better with glitter.

I'm about 98 percent convinced that I'm going to run the half marathon I signed up for on April 5 for my runiversary, mainly cause it's already paid for and I feel like I should. The only thing holding me back is gas money, but I think I'll regret it if I don't go. Thus, tomorrow I'll be going for a run for sure!

Also, today I went on several adventures. At one point I found myself climbing onto the very top of the RV in which I currently live in order to help put a tarp over it (I had leaks), and it struck me that this was possibly the worst idea ever considering my accident prone nature. After that, I went to the auto parts store by myself and totally seemed like I knew what I was talking about and it was amazing and impressive.

Oh, and I forgot my parents' dog's birthday. But don't worry, I told him it was today and sang him a song. I'm pretty sure he's okay with that.

I'm going to go eat corned beef and cabbage now. That is all.

I. am. so. frustrated.

Yesterday's long run (I was planning on about 9 or 10 miles) got postponed until today because I wasn't feeling well. I awoke this morning looking forward to a couple hours by myself, outdoors, just me and my ipod.

Then I lifted Suzy Macaroni, the rockstar beagle, down from my bed. My bed in the RV is raised up so far that she can't jump down without hurting herself, so I lift her up there every night as she is a quality foot warmer. Also, my dog is about 15 pounds overweight (partly due to my parent's love of giving their grandpuppy too many treats) so she weighs about 40 pounds. I could life 40 pounds in my sleep, but apparently not in my half-awake state this morning.

As I bent over to set her on the ground, I found myself yelling out in pain as my lower back decided to be all kinds of crazy. Then, I couldn't really walk. Did I seriously throw my back out at the age of 24? I think so.

It is feeling a little better right now, after walking around some, but I really must not have been "lifting with my legs" as they say. So now I don't know what to do with myself. Should I go running and see if that makes it feel better? Or should I rest it? Or should I just lock myself in a padded room so I quit injuring myself?

I'm frustrated. I can't stop doing stupid things that end up injuring me, and then I have to take time off from running. At this rate, who the heck knows if I'll be ready to run a 1/2 marathon on April 5, even if I am ready for it.

And I still can't seem to get a full night's sleep. I think I might very well go insane. The dog is so sleeping on the floor from now on. Except I know she probably won't, cause my dog is also some kind of ninja warrior and has figured out how to get up onto the bed but not down from it. It's all very mysterious and I have no clue how she does it--it must involve jumping onto a little ledge that's there and then somehow climbing up the side of the bed. Now if only she'd figure out how to get herself down, this never would have happened.

An "aha!" moment...

I really thought I was losing my mind for a few days. Like, lock me in a cell, don't give me sharp objects, going to be friends with Winona Ryder sort of crazy. Turns out that lack of sleep just seriously messes with your brain.

I must have looked like I felt on Monday, cause my father gave me a sleeping pill and ordered me to take it. Eight full hours of sleep later, I felt much more sane. Aha!

Last night I tried to go it alone and was back to nightmares and restlessness, but it was better than before, at least. I'm hoping that soon I'll be able to sleep like normal again.

One weird dream I had last night consisted of me running a half marathon... how is it fair that I worry about training while I'm freaking sleeping?!?!?! Not okay.

Setbacks

My foot injury made me slower. The sudden upheaval of my entire life made me cranky and provided a good excuse for wallowing for far too long. The winter got in my way and made it too cold to run regularly for a couple months.

But I'm still a runner. I ran about 4 miles today and remembered why I like running. Apparently that was just what I needed. Throughout the winter I often found myself wishing I had an extra day off to run during the day light hours, or a fun new path to run on, or time to go running at all. Now I have all of those things, times ten! Basically I think the universe wants me to take advantage of that.

Let the half marathon training commence! The only problem is I'm not sure I'll actually be able to run the half marathon on my run-iversary, due to financial/employment/location contraints... but I might as well train for it in case I can!

Old habits

Today I ate my feelings. There were many of them, and they all tasted delicious.

I'm sad to report that it didn't have the same effect as it once did... instead I feel kind of dirty. Darn it.

My mother said last week that I'm just feeling sorry for myself. Yes, Mom, I am. And I plan to do so with ice cream by my side.

Tomorrow I plan to stop wallowing, don't worry. Hey, remember when I was down 75 pounds, religiously training for a half marathon, and was super motivated and hardcore? Yeah, so do I. That was fun.

Blah.

I haven't run all week. I swear I'm busier as an unemployed person than I was as an employed person.

I have about a month and a half till my run-iversary, which I would really like to celebrate, but I have no idea if I'm going to be able to run the race I signed up for due to financial/employment constraints. Plus, unless I get my booty in gear, who knows if I'll be prepared to run a half marathon!

Next week I'm going to run like its my job. I swear. Things should be settled down by next week, so let's hope the weather agrees with me and it stops snowing. That would be nice. I have such fond memories of the days when I was gainfully employed and secure enough in my future that I signed up for races super far in advance...

Soon Mini Leslie is going to be in the sidebar playing video games again. I hate feeling like a slacker. On a plus note, I got some orthotics for my shoes, so if I ever find time to run again it should help me feet out.

I'm off to spend all day in the car!

Okay, who is with me?!?!?!

I was just reading part of a rather hilarious book: "The Non-Runner's Marathon Guide for Women: Get Off Your Butt and on With Your Training" and a particular tip struck me as interesting.

The author recommends that people striving to run a marathon find a friend to accompany them. Because misery loves company? Probably. Anyway, she says:

"I'm sure there are people who decide to train, read a how-to book, and a few months later cross the finish line. These people are not normal. Normal human beings are not equipped to endure chafing without the moral support of a fellow blistered being. Its just not in our nature."

...

So who wants to run a marathon with me? Apparently I need someone to chafe with!!!!

Hope, hope, glorious hope...

I watched the inauguration this morning in my office via live feeds on the Internet, all while instant messaging my older sister who was doing the same thing in England. It was pretty awesome. I am keeping my fingers crossed for Obama to do spectacular things while in office! Watching him speak about the state of our country always leaves me very hopeful.

I’m also hopeful about my foot finally healing… and as a result, I registered for another half marathon! When I did my first 5k in April of last year it was at an annual fundraising event in Portland—each year they host a 5K and a half marathon. So I figured what better way to celebrate my run-iversary than to run the half marathon at the same race? So that’s my plan. It’s on April 5, which means I shall start training ASAP. After that I should be in good shape to train throughout the summer for the Portland marathon in the fall. I love registering for things early cause if I’ve already paid my registration fee it motivates me more, for some reason. Nothing will get me out the door for a run during the remaining months of winter like having already spent money, I guess.

At first I was calling it my running-iversary, but then I realized that run-iversary sounded better. Don’t lie to yourself; we all know it’s a lovely new term. Happy inauguration day! Yay, America!

Brrrr!

I am typing this with mittens on because my desk is next to the drafty front door of my office. Currently the temperature here (with wind chill factor) is -10. That's damn cold.

It's supposed to stay this way all week. As such, there will not be much running outside for the next few days. I plan to make up for it with quality time on the elliptical as well as periods of dancing like a fool throughout my house. Other things too, probably.

The inability to go for a run without freezing to death has prompted me to look forward to future running endeavors. Last year in April I ran my first 5k ever, and just told a friend (who ran the first 5k with me) that I'm going to do the half marathon held on the same day this year. So there is another 13.1 miles in my future! When it is much warmer, luckily.

Half Marathon: FINISHED!!!!

Official time: 2:32:46!

Don't I look so victorious and non-sweaty in this photo? It's because we took it before I ran. I'm tricky like that.

I arrived in Boise on Friday and stopped to see a friend who just had a baby. Later I met up with a few other friends and we went to a corn maze in the dark which is just as creepy as it sounds. Also, I had a really good excuse to consume mass amounts of pasta and bread. Oh how I love me some carbs...

The next morning I had to pick up my packet and such at 8 a.m. My friend drove the course with me the night before whereupon I said awesome things like, "You call this a hill?" and "I'm going to kick these hills in the vagina!" Over the course of 13.1 miles there were three major hills--the first was gradual over three miles, the second was a baby hill and the third was a crazy ass-kicking hill that has probably sent someone into cardiac arrest at one point. Basically, I was glad I'd trained on hills, but still rather scared.

Before the race I was incredibly nervous. No matter how I looked at it, 13.1 miles seemed like a damn long way. Before the other races I have done (and I've only run three... two 5ks and a 10k) I was nervous but knew that it was only a limited amount of torture. A half marathon meant a couple hours of torture. Scary stuff.

Before I knew it we were lining up at the start. I tend to be ridiculously chatty so I ended up talking to a woman who had a baby five months ago. She hadn't actually trained for this type of distance and told me she'd only done 6 miles at a time. She stuck with me for about a mile and fell back--I hope she finished! She seemed very nice. Anyway, I tend to be okay at pacing myself so I tried to stay at a somewhat slower pace at the beginning in order to not want to die towards the end of the race. I kept seeing things people had dropped--a car key, energy gel, lip gloss... who carries lip gloss with them during a half marathon? I thought that was weird.

By mile three I started to get a little warm (I wore a zip up jacket cause it was f-ing cold and raining) so I became very creative in my methods of unpinning my number and pinning it to my tank top so I could tie my jacket around my waist. I'm amazing. It took some serious skill to do that and continue running, but luckily it distracted me from the torture of the first hill. Before I knew it I was over the first hill and running through a cute little town. Volunteers cheered me on, which was nice of them, and a man stared at my fellow runners and I as if he were wondering what the heck hundreds of people were doing running by his house. That would make a person curious.

Around this point I noticed that I was running behind a giant man. He was ridiculously tall. Also, he and his running buddy kept taking walking breaks so I would catch up to them (slow and steady wins the race, except they totally finished before me but whatever) and just as I would pass them they'd start running again, go super fast, and walk awhile later.

The second hill was tiny (if by tiny you assume I mean only moderately painful) and the next few miles passed by without incident. I chatted with a few old men around me. It's strange but it seems like I always end up with the old men--during the 10k I made friends with an old man and ran with him the whole time.

And then came the third hill... Ah, the torturous third hill. It hurt. It hurt badly. As we began to climb it the view was of the road winding up a gigantic mountain in front of us--I could see people waaaaaay ahead of me reaching the summit. I'm from Oregon; I don't throw the word "mountain" around lightly. The f-ing hill was huge. At one point the road leveled out a bit and I said to one of the old men running next to me, "This is the top, right?" He hesitated, so then I told him to please lie to me. He obliged. Five seconds later I said, "You really are a liar. But I appreciate the effort."

This hill did not mess around. The man I had been speaking proceeded to say, "Oh there will be a nice walk in a minute." In my head my reaction was, "Walking?!?! Pshaw! Walking is for sissies! There will be no walking!" When I was maybe a tenth of a mile from the top of the hill I looked around me and everyone was walking. Not a single person was still running--next to me, in front of me, or behind me. At this point I knew I had to walk. I find no shame in this because it was either walk to the top of the hill or die trying to run just for the point of running. That hill was a bitch.

Finally I did reach the top, and my new friend told me that it really was the top. Also, he warned me that right at the end there was another tiny hill that surprises you but once you are over it the finish line is right there. He was a wise fellow. I believe the third hill ended around mile 8 or 9... Somewhere around this point I noticed that I could hear my arm flab slapping against my side--I'm not saying that to be self deprecating, I just had never noticed that it makes a sound because usually I run while listening to music. During the race I wanted to focus and listen to nature, so I was discovering all kinds of interesting things. So that was fun. I started to wonder what the heck happened to mile 10 because I swear it took awhile to show up, but eventually it did. Miles 10 to 11 were moderately uneventful. There was running. I ran, and ran, and ran. At one of the aid stations the cups were bigger than usual and my attempt to drink whilst running led to me pouring water directly down my shirt, but it was very refreshing so I figure it served the same purpose. Eventually we came back towards town where a nice man had his hose turned on for the runners passing by his yard. Right before mile 12 one of the volunteers yelled, "You have under a mile left!" Either someone didn't inform her what mile marker she was at or she was just lying to us so we'd keep going--either way, it was mean, because then I saw the mile 12 marker and knew it was actually just OVER a mile.

I ran up the final incline and saw the finish in the distance! Woo hoo! That's always my favorite part. I decided to show off and sprinted to the finish, if by sprinting you take it to mean "ran at a slightly quicker pace in order to not look like a turtle could beat me." I saw my cheering squad, which consisted of a few friends and my parents, and raised my arms above my head while yelling, "WOOO! I AM DONE!" Lucky for all of you, they captured me looking happy to be finishing:

After the race I went out on the town with a few friends, and it was then that I remembered why I don't drink very often. Back in my college days I did my fair share of partying and could hold my own when it came to beer drinking. Now, however, I rarely have more than one or two drinks. Even having one drink usually leaves me feeling gross so I tend to just not bother. Last night involved WAY too much booze for me... Today I feel like crap and had to drive seven hours to get home. Unpleasant, to say the least. My night ended like this:

So now I can say I have finished a half marathon. I think that's pretty cool. Also, it was f-ing hard. I feel very badass.

For some reason (I think the adrenaline made me a little insane) I told the cheering squad that I'm going to run the Portland Marathon next October. It went something like this: they asked when I was going to do a full marathon and I responded with, "I don't know... how about next October? That's when the Portland Marathon happens, I think." So now I have basically committed myself to going for the full marathon. I'm just glad I have almost a year to prepare for that one!!!

I finished in 711th place out of 908 people. I'll take it! That means I ran about 11:30 miles and I'm quite happy with that. I finished earlier than I expected and definitely accomplished my only goal (to finish). I'm proud of myself!

Oh heck!

You know that feeling you get right before you get sick? The one where you aren't really sick but you just feel achy and gross and can tell a cold/flu/death is approaching?

I started feeling that way tonight.

Currently I am obsessively drinking herbal tea and hoping that it's just my body telling me it needs a good night of sleep. How do I get better by tomorrow? I have a trip to see old friend and a half marathon to complete!!!!

I'm going to be very irritated if I get sick and can't do this. There is no logical reason for me to be sick right now, darn it!

Update to follow--either a really irritated one about how my immune system hates me, or one of excitement that I complete a goal. I'm going to write another post right after this about my newest goal because it is hilarious but completely unrelated to the fact that I feel a little crappy right now.
